Built to Endure: What 250 Years of History Can Teach Us About Retirement Planning

As America celebrates its 250th birthday this year, many of us will spend time enjoying family traditions, gathering with loved ones, and reflecting on the remarkable history of our country. But this milestone also offers an opportunity to consider an important question: What allows something to truly endure?

Over the past two and a half centuries, the United States has experienced wars, economic downturns, political disagreements, social change, and countless unexpected challenges. Yet through each chapter, the nation has continued moving forward. What makes that story so extraordinary isn't that adversity was avoided—it's that adversity was overcome.

That same principle applies to many of the most important things in life.

The strongest families are not those that never face difficulties. The most successful businesses are not those that never experience setbacks. And the best retirement plans are not the ones that unfold exactly as expected. Instead, the things that endure are often the things that remain flexible, adapt to changing circumstances, and stay grounded in the values and goals that matter most.

Retirement Planning Isn't About Predicting the Future

One of the most common questions we hear from clients is some variation of, "Am I going to be okay?"

People want confidence. They want to know whether they've saved enough, planned enough, and prepared enough for the years ahead. Many assume there must be a specific account balance—a magic number—that signals they've arrived. For some, that number is $1 million. For others, it's significantly more.

The reality is that retirement planning rarely works that way.

A portfolio balance by itself doesn't tell the whole story. What matters is understanding what those financial resources are capable of accomplishing. Can they support your desired lifestyle? Allow you to travel? Provide more time with family? Support causes that are important to you? Most importantly, can they continue doing those things throughout retirement?

Retirement isn't simply about reaching a number.

It's about creating an income stream, a lifestyle, and a future that can endure.

Resilience Matters More Than Predictions

The first half of 2026 has provided investors with no shortage of headlines. Trade negotiations, inflation concerns, geopolitical tensions, interest rate uncertainty, and questions surrounding economic growth have all contributed to market anxiety. Yet despite these concerns, both the economy and the markets have demonstrated remarkable resilience.

History has consistently shown that markets evolve. Leadership changes. New opportunities emerge. Conditions shift.

Rather than attempting to predict every headline correctly, successful long-term investing is often built upon discipline, adaptability, and a willingness to adjust as evidence changes. The strongest investment strategies are not dependent upon a single forecast being correct. They are designed to function across a wide range of possible outcomes.

At Nash-Hasty, we believe successful investing isn't about knowing exactly what comes next. It's about being prepared no matter what comes next.

Building a Plan Designed to Endure

At Nash-Hasty Private Wealth Management, we often talk about our GPS Retirement Roadmap™—Goals, Planning, and Solutions. Like any successful journey, the destination may remain the same even when the route changes. Life rarely follows a perfectly straight line. Careers change. Health circumstances evolve. Opportunities arise. Challenges emerge.

The plans that endure are not the plans that perfectly predict the future.

They are the plans that remain resilient enough to navigate it.

As we move through the second half of 2026, we continue to believe that preparation, adaptability, and a steadfast commitment to what matters most remain among the most valuable qualities any financial plan can possess. Because the things built to endure have never depended on perfect conditions—they have depended on resilience.
